domain name, short and sweet or more descriptive

When it comes to domain names and finding the right name for your site or business what seems to be the best practice? when you look at domains that everyone knows what do you think of? well i think that the most used domain name are google, yahoo, bing, amazon, ebay, youtube and more, but as the internet is getting bigger and bigger good domains seem to run a premium online. People tend to move to domains that really describe the business and seem to be long and hell to type in. when you find a site like www.this-is-my-store-and-buy-from-me.com seems to be too long in my mind and if you do have a long domain do you use dashes or just run the words together? so i have many domain names and web sites most domains use my last name others are my companies that i run, but one thing that i have done is keep them short and sweet and easy to spell, like chrisexotics.com and chriswhitney.com i also have whitneyracing.com. one that seemed to break this was my e-commsolution and let me tell you why, i seem to have a hard time adding the “-” to the name and i find that solution needs to be solutions with a “s” in it but over all its a good name it has to deal with e commerce and that is what the e-comm is and its a solution to any e commerce problems, now its not hard to remember or type into a browser and if you search for it under e-comm solution you will find me and is that not what we all go for anyway, dont you want the search engine to find you and bring you to the customer? well yes so a domain is only as good as the SEO that is on the site.

all to often i find “new” to the interwebs and online web sites making long domain names and as i am in the industry all the time i see too many of the long domain but when you search do you find the long domain first? no you dont you find a domain that you would have never guessed but they have good content on the page and rank high from what they have to offer not the name. so my point of this post is try and keep a domain short and sweet and not long. work on SEO with content and words that discribe what you and your site do and you will rank and place with everyone!
